Dr. Gayle Yaverbaum
Dr.
Gayle Yaverbaum, Director of Information Technology Programs at Penn
State Harrisburg, has been selected as the EDSIG
Information Systems Educator of the Year for 2005. Dr. Yaverbaum was
honored at the
ISECON 2005
Awards Luncheon on Saturday, October 8th, 2005 in Columbus, OH.
Dr. Yaverbaum is charged with the administration of Penn State Harrisburg undergraduate programs in Information Systems and Information Sciences and Technology as well as a master’s degree program in Information Systems. Dr. Yaverbaum holds a Bachelor of Business Degree and Masters of Public Administration from Penn State University and a Masters in Computer Science and Ph.D. from Temple University.
Dr. Yaverbaum has been a leader in Information Systems curriculum development at the Harrisburg campus of Penn State and also in University wide efforts that led to the development of the Information Sciences and Technology (IST) degree program. She teaches in the areas of programming languages, information management, and WEB Design and Programming. She has led several development teams that produced interactive, computer-based tutorials and has been a leader in both research and the utilization of asynchronous tools to support collaborative learning experiences.
Dr. Yaverbaum was recognized in 1999 by the Central Pennsylvania Technology Council as Educator of the Year for her work in the area of technology education. At the national level, Dr. Yaverbaum has been an active member of ACM where she participated as a member of the Conferences Board and subsequently the Special Interest Group (SIG) Board. She was one of the authors of the Information Systems Accreditation criteria and more recently the revised General and Information Systems proposed criteria. She is currently a member of the ABET Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) Executive Committee where she co-chairs the Criteria Committee. Most recently, she was elected Vice Chair for Operations of the CAC and regularly serves as a Program Evaluator and Team Chair.
Dr. Yaverbaum is also a recognized author and researcher. She is the co-author of a book, editor of a text on the subject of information management, has published in numerous professional journals, and is a regular speaker at professional meetings. Most recently, her research interests have been in the use of technology in education, especially pertaining to collaborative and problem-based learning environments.
